About Me

Hi there! My name is Tijana Selak. I’m a science communicator living in Calgary, Alberta - just an hour east of the Rocky Mountains.

I grew up in the 90’s, idolizing science personalities like Jane Goodall, Steve Irwin, and the Kratt brothers. From an early age, I admired the way that they engaged audiences in learning about nature, and encouraged young people to respect and love wildlife.

These early influences inspired a life-long love of animals that led me to eventually pursue a BSc in Zoology and an MSc in Environmental Science. I hold certification as an Educator with the National Geographic Society, and am designated as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.

Over the years, I’ve worked as a wildlife rehabber, conservation educator, and environmental scientist. I’m committed to following my passion for nature, and using it to make the world a better place for the wild creatures and spaces I love.

My journey has taken me on many interesting adventures, from feeding cheetahs in South Africa to rehabilitating pelicans and raccoons in California. I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer and work with a variety of non-profit organizations, including wildlife centres, bird groups, the Calgary Zoo, and Ocean Wise. I’ve presented in front of thousands of people over the years, with animals like snakes, bugs, and owls by my side.

Though I wouldn’t trade these experiences for anything, a career in wildlife advocacy is not an easy one. There are many challenges, from finding steady work to facing the grim reality of a rapidly changing world. Modern challenges like habitat destruction, plastic pollution, the wildlife trade, and climate change threaten to drive many of the species that I love to extinction… within my lifetime.

However, in the wise words of my guru, Dr. Jane Goodall, “there is still so much in the world worth fighting for… it is not too late to turn things around, if we all do our part”.

So I will do mine, here and now, as best as I can.

“My job, my mission, the reason I’ve been put onto this planet, is to save wildlife. And I thank you for comin’ with me.”

— Steve Irwin
